Kalpana Bhaskaran MSc, MPhil, PhD

Dr Kalpana Bhaskaran is currently the Head for the Centre of Applied Nutrition Services and the Glycemic Index Research Unit at Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore. She championed the design, planning and implementation of Singapore’s and the region’s first accredited Glycemic Index Research Unit (GIRU). She also oversees the Centre’s areas which encompass the Applied Nutrition Research, Food Technology Domain and the Bistro Lab (a Learning Enterprise). She is currently involved as PI and Co-PI for many ongoing research studies in Glycemic Index, Applied Nutrition, efficacy testing, food valorization and microbiome. She is the cluster co-chair for the Agri-Food Cluster, which is an initiative to drive applied research at institution level.

She was awarded the “Inaugural Teaching Excellence Award” for outstanding lecturing, was conferred the National Day commendation award for recognition of her work and its impact to diabetes management and education in 2014 and the Most Inspirational Lecturer in 2020. In September 2017, her team was awarded the Innergy award by the Ministry of Education for her innovation efforts. Recently the project led by her, Diabetes and Flu campaign, an initiative done in collaboration with Diabetes Singapore and Sanofi won two Silver awards in two categories under PR Awards Asia 2020. She was also recently nominated and shortlisted for the final round for the Public Service Transformation (Dare to Do award).

Dr Kalpana has been appointed as an expert advisor to the government in relation to sugar reduction from the sugar-sweetened beverages. She was invited to be a part of Ministry of Health’s (MOH) citizen’s jury and working group on “Patient empowerment” which is one the initiatives by MOH to beat diabetes. She is invited to sit on the Singapore Armed Forces Feeding and Institutional Catering advisory panel, to offer her expertise in food and nutrition. She is invited to be on the Focus Group on “Proposed New Standards on Nutrition and Food Service for Childcare Children and Student Care. She is selected as Skills Future Mentor by Enterprise Singapore to investigate the learning and development needs of SMEs. She regularly acts as a food and nutrition consultant to local and overseas food companies. A frequently featured commentator for her expert opinion on food and nutrition issues in both print and television media, Dr Kalpana is also invited to speak at local and overseas conferences and seminars.

She is the President of Diabetes Singapore and the Vice President of Singapore Nutrition and Dietetics Association. She is the Executive Committee member of the Asian Nutrition Society for Sports and Health (ANSSH), Beijing, China. She is the country representative for Singapore for the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, USA.

Clin Assoc Prof Lee Shu Woan, Clinical Advisor, Office of Innovation, Changi General Hospital

Dr Lee graduated from NUS and qualified as an Emergency Physician after passing the FRCS A & E Examinations in 1999. She has a special interest in Emergency Cardiac Care. She has been passionately involved in the education of medical students, EM trainees and other allied health professionals.

Beyond nurturing students from YLL School of Medicine and LKC School of Medicine, she also teaches and mentors students from SUTD-Duke NUS program. Currently she works as a Senior Consultant in the A & E of Changi General Hospital (CGH) devoting her time to clinical practice of Emergency Medicine and Innovation. Dr Lee is also the clinical advisor to Office of Innovation at CGH. She advises innovators, sharpens their innovative ideas and bringing some of these ideas to fruition through her wealth of clinical knowledge and experience.

Adj Asst Prof Samuel Teong Huang Chew, Senior Consultant Geriatric Medicine Department, Changi General Hospital

Dr Chew is a senior consultant at the Geriatric Medicine Department, Changi General Hospital, Singhealth CGH Campus. He is also Adj Assoc Professor of Medicine with Yong Loo Ling School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He is a tutor for the Centre of Healthcare Simulation at NUS and the Geriatric Medicine Modular Training Program, Academy of Medicine Singapore and Chapter of Geriatrician, College of Physicians Singapore. He is also faculty member for the Singhealth Residency Program in Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine and Family Medicine.

He received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1997; a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Informatics from University College London in 2007 and his specialist training in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine from the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board in UK in 2009. Dr Chew went on to obtain his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2013 and Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine Singapore in 2014. He has been working at Changi General Hospital since October 2010.

Dr Chew has a deep passion in delivering evidence-based individualised care for geriatric patients, teaching undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees, and the application of health-care technology in the real-world clinical setting. Clinical work includes acute geriatric medicine, geriatric rehabilitation and discharge planning, management of multi-morbidity in the acute and ambulatory setting, pressure injury prevention, management of sarcopenia and championing good nutritional health in the elderly. Current research interest areas include nutritional health, sarcopenia, clinical pharmacology, pressure injury prevention and cognitive impairment in the older population.

Mr Sri Kameswaran, Area Centre Director, Research and Development, Abbott

Sri currently leads the Pacific Asia R&D Center for Abbott Nutrition, where he partners with the cross-functional teams to deliver the Innovation pipeline for Pacific Asia. Prior to Abbott, Sri led the Category R&D efforts for the GSK Nutrition portfolio for over 6 years and delivered significant innovations and clinical studies. In his previous roles, Sri led the Global R&D team for Tata Global Beverages based out of London and was with the Kellogg Company in the U.S in various R&D leadership roles.

Throughout his career, Sri has been responsible for innovative new product launches, core product improvements, and significant capacity expansions - while bringing together multicultural technical teams to deliver business-critical results.

Sri has a diverse Food Product / Process Development experience and a proven track record across multiple food categories.

Sri has a M.Tech in Dairy and Food Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He also received a M.S in Food Science & Nutrition, and an MBA in Entrepreneurship and Strategy, both from the University of Minnesota, USA.

Dr Agnes Siew Ling Tey, Senior Clinical Scientist, Abbott Nutrition Research and Development, Asia Pacific Centre, Singapore

Agnes Siew Ling Tey is a Senior Clinical Scientist at Abbott Nutrition Research and Development (ANRD) Asia Pacific Center in Singapore since 2016. Prior to joining Abbott, Agnes was a Research Fellow at A*STAR, Singapore for over three years. Agnes has a BCApSc, an MSc with distinction and a PhD in Human Nutrition. All three degrees were obtained from the University of Otago, New Zealand and she did her first postdoctoral research in the same university.

Agnes has over 40 publications including international peer-reviewed journal articles, a book chapter, and an evidence-based position statement for the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand. Her research interests lie in the innovative dietary approaches for the prevention and management of cardiometabolic diseases, obesity, and malnutrition in diverse population groups.
